Neil Dudgeon was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, on January 2, 1961.

He showed an interest in acting from a young age - starring in several school plays and studying drama at university in Bristol.

He is currently married to BBC Radio producer Mary Peate. The pair have two children together - Joseph and Greta.

Mary and Neil once appeared on an episode of All Star Mr & Mrs back in 2012.

Hosted by Phillip Schofield, the pair gave a rare insight into their life off-screen. At one point, Phillip asked which fictional detective her husband was like in real life.

Given the options of Miss Marple, Poirot or Columbo, Mary opted for the third, which was a match.

In a romantic moment, she said: “None of them are very lovely are they, not nearly lovely enough for you darling.”

Neil also opened up on his relationship with his wife in an interview with Radio Times.

He revealed how she once mocked him for binge-watching Midsomer Murders.

He said: “I accidentally came across the beginning of an episode recently and thought, ‘I’ll just watch the first two minutes.’

“An hour later my wife found me still there.

“She said, ‘What are you doing? You spend your whole life making it, why are you watching it?’”

Despite DCI Barnaby’s comfortable life in sleepy Midsomer, he has also opened up about leading a relatively humble life.

“I have a small house in London with a tiny, tiny garden!," he told the outlet.

“When we visit the lovely big houses in Midsomer, I mooch around very jealously, thinking, ‘Ooh, how much would this be?’”

A little known fact about Neil is that he also appeared in the romantic comedy film Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.

Neil played the taxi driver who takes Bridget Jones to meet Mark Darcy at the end of the film.

Neil Dudgeon will appear on Midsomer Murders on ITV at 8.30pm this evening (January 14).
