Kate Middleton made her podcast debut this weekend on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast with host and best-selling author Giovanna Fletcher. The Duchess of Cambridge discussed pregnancy, motherhood, and her “5 Big Questions” survey, and she also revealed that she turned to “hypnobirthing” when she delivered her three children: Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1.
Middleton suffered from an extreme form of morning sickness known as hyperemesis gravidarum during all of her pregnancies, and she explained that it led to her realizing the power of the mind over the body.

“I got very bad morning sickness, so I’m not the happiest of pregnant people. “[It was] utterly rotten. I was really sick – I wasn’t eating the things I should be eating – but yet, the body was still able to take all the goodness from my body and to grow new life, which I think is fascinating,” said Kate. “It was through hyperemesis that I really realized the power of the mind over the body because I really had to try everything and everything to try and help me through it.”
The Duchess explained how she connected with hypnobirthing, which includes self-hypnosis and techniques to help the body relax before labor and childbirth. According to the Mayo Clinic, hypnobirthing classes teach how to use music, visualization, words, prompts from birthing partners, and positive thinking to help control labor pains and sensations.
Middleton said that there are different levels, and Prince William didn’t stand there and chant sweet nothings to her. She added that it was something she didn’t even ask her husband about because she wanted to do something for herself.

She saw the power of the meditation and deep breathing in hypnobirthing, and when she was really sick it helped her realize that she could take control during labor. Middleton says that it was “hugely powerful” because things were so bad during her pregnancy, and it helped her enjoy labor.
Middleton explained that she actually liked labor because she knew it was an event with an ending. However, she understands that hypnobirthing doesn’t work for everyone because labor and delivery can be extremely difficult.
