Ken Rex McElroy was born on June 1, 1934, in Skidmore, Nodaway County, Missouri, and died on July 10, 1981, in Skidmore. His unsolved murder, which was dubbed “the town bully,” became the centre of worldwide interest when it went unresolved for many years. Through his life, McElroy was accused of a slew of crimes, including assault and child molestation, statutory rape, arson, hog and cattle rustling, and burglary, amongst others.
Over the course of his career, he was indicted 21 times, but was only convicted once, on the 21st occasion. In 1981, McElroy was found guilty of shooting and severely wounding Ernest “Bo” Bowenkamp, a 70-year-old grocer in the town the year before and was sentenced to prison. When McElroy won his appeal and was freed on bail, he immediately launched a harassment campaign against Bowenkamp, the town’s Church of Christ pastor, and others who were sympathetic to Bowenkamp. With an M1 Garand rifle and bayonet, he barricaded himself in the D&G Tavern, where he subsequently threatened to murder Bowenkamp, who was there at the time.
The next day, McElroy was shot to death in broad daylight while sitting in his pickup vehicle on Skidmore’s main street with his wife, Trena, in the passenger seat. He was hit by bullets from at least two different guns while standing in front of a throng of individuals ranging in age from 30 to 46, according to police estimates. To this day, no one has been charged in connection with McElroy’s killing, according to authorities.
