The actor was raised by his mother, Suzanne, and father, John Perry. They welcomed the renowned actor in 1969 but separated when Matthew was only nine months old and when his mother was 21.

Although John and Suzanne never had more kids together, they welcomed more children in their respective marriages. His mother married Keith Morrison, who worked at "Canada AM" and went on to host "Dateline" on NBC.
