Upon enrolling at Georgetown University, P.J. Soles aspired to become the first female ambassador to the Soviet Union. Soles’s career goal changed, though, when she was inspired to explore acting after seeing the Actors Studio in New York City.
She began modeling for fashion magazines and performing in commercials after relocating to Manhattan. She was selected to play a shampoo model in Perry Henzell’s 1974 film “No Place Like Home.” Though Henzell couldn’t finish it until 2006, it would have been her feature debut.
In 1975, she moved to Los Angeles and starred in her first film, “Blood Bath.” During her 1976 and 1977 film tryouts for “Carrie” and “Star Wars,” she was up against hundreds of actors. She also tried out for the Princess Leia part in “Star Wars,” but Carrie Fisher was chosen in the end.
However, she was selected to play Norma Watson in “Carrie,” directed by Brian De Palma. Sissy Spacek, Nancy Allen, Amy Irving, John Travolta, and Piper Laurie costarred with her in the movie.
Originally intended to have only one line, De Palma extended her role to encompass multiple lines, positioning her as Allen’s secondary opponent, Chris Hargensen. During the prom scene, a fire hose exploded, hurting Soles’ eardrum on the set.
In the 1979 musical comedy film “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School,” she portrayed The Ramones’ Riff Randell.
